Canada’s First Dementia-Inclusive Park Opens a New Chapter in Accessible Public Spaces
Calgary’s Martin Family Legacy Garden is Canada’s first dementia-inclusive park, thoughtfully designed to support people living with dementia, their caregivers and families. Features including sensory gardens, colour-coded pathways, additional wayfinding signage, shaded seating and accessible spaces are intended to make the park safer, easier to navigate and more welcoming for everyone.
The project, located in Southview Park in southeast Calgary, was developed by Parks Foundation Calgary with input from researchers, healthcare professionals, community organizations and families affected by dementia. It is expected to be completed in fall 2026.
